4 Features Empty Nesters Need in Their New House

July 29, 2019 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

When purchasing a new home in the Markham area, your stage of life will greatly affect the type of property and the many features you desire. For example, if you have young children at home, you may be looking for ample space and storage. However, when you are an empty nester, these needs will change. Let’s talk about several features many empty nesters want – and need —  in their new home.

1. A Bungalow-Style Home

Many empty nesters are looking for a home that will satisfy their needs in the future. This means they need a home where they can easily move throughout even if their mobility is decreased. Stairs are not only difficult for the elderly but they can be dangerous as well. A bungalow home is a type of property where all of your main living areas are located on the main floor. This type of property eliminates the need of stairs, a benefit for many senior citizens.

2. Larger Walking Spaces

Not only are stairs a large deterrent for empty nesters but homes with narrow and small living spaces are as well. Many empty nesters are looking for homes with large hallways and door frames. This means that if you need a wheelchair in the near future, you can still get around your home with ease.

3. Low Maintenance

Many individuals, including empty nesters, do not want to spend all of their free time maintaining and cleaning the home. One of the reasons many of these individuals choose to downsize in the first place is the responsibility of homeownership is too demanding. Empty nesters need housing accommodations that are low maintenance. Condos or townhomes may be ideal for many as the property managers takes care of much of the upkeep of the property.

4. Great Location

No matter what stage of life you may be in, the location of the property plays a critical role in how well you love the home. For empty nesters, you don’t have to worry as much about school districts and neighbourhoods with lots of children. Rather, you may need to think about the noise in the area and the crime rate. You should also consider the proximity to various places such as your doctor’s offices, your favourite golf course, etc.

No matter if you are an empty nester or in another stage of life, Markham real estate agent Martin MacFarlane is ready to help you find your dream home. Contact him today for more information.
