6 Great Events in Markham This Summer

May 11, 2016 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

Summer is almost here and there is so much to do in Markham! These six events are all free, fun-filled and all located right in the great City of Markham. Check them out.

Unionville Festival – June 4th and 5th

The Unionville Festival has been celebrating Markham for 47 years and there are a number of great family-friendly events during this weekend event. Starting with a fun-filled parade, there will also be many live performers including Indigenous dancers, salsa classes, and the Markham Concert Band. Join the flash mob dances, do the scavenger race, yoga, fitness classes or sports all going on during the event. The Funky 5k is a run or walk for the whole family supporting the Markham Stouffville Hospital. Vendors will also be on hand, showcasing food, crafts and more.

Markham Village Music Festival – June 17th and 18th

Enjoy music from some of Markham’s most talented performers at this two-day event, located right on Main Street. There will be free admission to this event, and there will be close to 40 live performances. There will be a children’s village with carnival rides, food, games, a petting zoo and a craft area. Street performers round out the fun, along with face painting. You can ride your bike to the event and park it in the Valet Bike Parking tent.

Taste of Asia Festival – June 25th and 26th

The Taste of Asia festival has over 150 street vendor booths with amazing cuisine and great entertainment. Located at Kennedy Road and Steeles Ave. E., this event offers free admission. Last year’s event had martial arts demonstrations, dancing and 3 on 3 basketball.

Markham Canada Day Celebrations – July 1st

Don’t miss out on the Canada Day events, located at the Milne Dam Conservation area. Starting with a people’s parade, the national anthem and a flag raising ceremony, this patriotic event goes all day and into the night. With completely free admission, the kids will love the children’s activities, live entertainment and multiple food vendors. Fireworks will happen at dusk (approximately 10pm). Park at the Markville Shopping Centre and walk down.

Unionville Canada Day Celebrations – July 1st

Located at the Millennium Bandstand, there is entertainment by the Kindred Spirits Orchestra, as well as fireworks. This event has free admission and starts at 8pm.

Markham Jazz Festival – August 18th to 21st

Now in their 19th year, the Markham Jazz Festival boasts incredible jazz performers from all over the world, in a variety of genres. The opening night concert will be at the Varley Art Gallery, with the rest of the free concerts occurring at the Millennium Bandstand, the Varley Art Gallery, the McKay Art Centre Beer and Wine Garden and other stages located throughout Markham. With a party-like atmosphere, attendees are invited to travel from venue to venue – either on the street or at one of the concert locations.

RBC Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival – August 27th

Get the kids outside during this large event in its 18th year. This is Ontario’s largest children’s festival and it takes place at the Markham Civic Centre, with free entertainment, play zones, crafts, face painting and a wide variety of vendors. Get a play-all-day wristband to get on the rides, climb the rock wall, bounce in the bouncy castle and visit the petting zoo.
