7 Things to Toss From Your Home Before a Showing

July 6, 2020 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

During a showing, you want your home to appear large and open. You want potential buyers to easily envision themselves living in the space. One way to accomplish this is to declutter your house. By getting rid of many unnecessary and unused items from around your home, potential buyers will have an easier time falling in love with your property.

Here are seven items you may want to toss from your home before a showing.

1. Extra Shoes

Do you have extra shoes laying near your front door? Are they cluttering your closets? Spend time tossing old shoes and those you rarely wear. Remove all shoes from the doorways and organize them nicely so they aren’t an eyesore.

2. Paper Piles

When was the last time you sorted through the large paper piles sitting on your counters? Go through these paper piles and throw away all documents that you no longer need. For those papers that you do wish to keep, create a secure and organized paper filing system.

3. Extra Cooking Utensils

Do you have a dozen wooden spoons and spatulas? What about measuring cups? Get rid of all extras that you no longer need. Many potential buyers will look in cupboards and drawers and so you want these areas to appear organized and free from clutter.

4. Old Towels

If the towels in your bathroom and kitchen areas are stained, frayed, and ratted, throw them out. New, fresh towels will add pops of colour to rooms in your house and a fresh, clean look. Plus, towels cost very little to replace.

5. Unused Furniture

Too many pieces of furniture can make a room appear small and crowded. When decluttering, get rid of all excess and unused furniture. If you don’t want to get rid of these items completely, move them to a storage shed or a friend or family member’s house until after you have received an offer.

6. Old Small Kitchen Appliances

Is your coffee maker reaching the end of its life? What about your toaster or microwave? If these items sit on your countertops, it may be time to throw out the old and bring in the new. Older appliances can create eyesores around your home and make your space look outdated and poorly maintained. Plus, you will love using a new appliance each day.

7. Old Toys

Are you children’s rooms filled with toys that they no longer use and have outgrown? These items can quickly accumulate around your home and create a crowded, cluttered mess. Take the time to go through all of these toys and throw away all unwanted and unused items. You will feel much better and your home’s bedrooms will appear much nicer as well.

Preparing your home for a showing can certainly take a lot of work but it will be well worth the effort. If you are ready to place your home on the market, contact Markham real estate agent Martin MacFarlane today
