Checklist for the First Night in Your New Home

May 19, 2017 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

Congratulations on the purchase of your new Markham home! You’ve done the hard part and now the stress of moving comes. Moving day is exhausting, confusing and just a general pain in the butt. With boxes everywhere, you won’t know where to find the things you need, when you need them. Here is a helpful and handy checklist of everything you’ll to bring on your first night in your new house and have it accessible so you can reduce your stress level. Pack these items in your vehicle and keep them in a spot in the new house where they won’t get lost amongst the boxes.

Practical Items

These are items that you may not think about, but that you will inevitably need (and won’t want to search through boxes looking for them).

·         Scissors

·         Flashlight

·         Phone charger

·         Pens

·         Paper

·         Markers

·         Plug-in phone

·         Duct tape

Tools

You may have to put together and take apart furniture during your move and having the tools handy will save you a lot of time. Doors sometimes need to be removed to get furniture in the house and things inevitably get broken.

·         Box cutters

·         Screwdriver

·         Hammer

·         Nails

·         Screws

·         Pliers

Cleaning supplies

While your new house could come sparkling clean, there is sure to be some spots in the home you want cleaned before you use them. Have your cleaning supplies on hand to make the job easy.

·         Rubber gloves

·         Rags

·         Broom

·         Garbage bags

·         Vinegar and water in a spray bottle

·         Paper towels

·         All-purpose cleaners

·         Sponges

·         Toilet bowl brush

Paperwork

Keep all important paperwork close when you move. If you pack it in a box and that box gets lost, replacing everything will be a huge hassle, especially since you now also have a new address.

·         Passports

·         Cheque book

·         Birth certificates

·         Social insurance cards

·         Closing documents

·         Name and phone number of important contacts involved in your sale/move

o   Real estate agent

o   Movers

o   Emergency contacts

Comfort Items

Of course you want some comfort after a long day of moving. These items will ensure you are able to rest after all your boxes are moved in.

·         Toilet paper

·         Bedding

·         Hand soap

·         Shower curtain

·         Towels

·         Pyjamas

·         Clothes to wear the day after moving

·         Pain relief

·         Toiletries

·         Medications

·         First Aid Kit

Kids Items

Kids are just that little bit of an extra hassle on moving day. Ensure they are taken care of and kept busy so they are out of your way.

·         Electronic devices

·         Favourite toy

·         Bedding

·         Pyjamas

·         Night lights

·         Change of clothing

·         Other entertainment items

·         Toiletries (shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste)

·         Baby supplies like formula, bottles, diapers, cream – anything you would pack in a diaper bag for a weekend away

Eating items

You are going to want to eat at some point on moving day and you need to make it super easy to do so.

·         Disposable plates, forks, spoons

·         Takeout menu

·         Cash to buy food

·         Easy to access snacks (granola bars, fruit, cereal)

·         Cooler filled with cold drinks

·         Bottle opener

·         Cups

·         Coffee Maker or kettle

·         Mugs

·         Coffee/tea

Pet Items

Don’t forget about fluffy on moving day! They need comfort too!

·         Crate

·         Leash

·         Collar with new address tags

·         Pet food

·         Pet bed or blanket

·         Treats

·         Toys
