Decorating with Feng Shui

September 30, 2016 By Martin MacFarlane 1 Comment

Many Markham homeowners decorate according to Feng Shui. This ancient practice is based on the idea that your home is a mirror of what is happening inside you and that you want to keep it in alignment and harmony. Everything in your home has energy and you want that energy to flow freely and you can do so by following the rules of the practice of Feng Shui.

How can you practice Feng Shui?

Not only is this practice essentially free, it is known to give you calm and make you happy. Even if you don’t truly believe that Feng Shui could be beneficial in your home, just the practice of changing things up and freshening up your home’s look will make you feel more content.

Seating

Feng Shui principals subscribe to placing furniture so it is conducive to conversations, which means that your furniture should face each other and make it easier for everyone to talk to each other. The furniture should be close together, but not feel cramped and every seat should have a solid surface for placing drinks, books and other items. You’ll want to be able to walk through the space without touching anything.

All sofas should be against solid walls, with a clear view of the door. If you can’t place it against a solid wall, a solid piece of furniture, like a console, should be placed behind it. A mirror placed in front of the couch, so you can view what is behind you will help keep you protected.

Shapes

Your coffee table should be a circle, so energy can go around it, but you want a variety of shapes in the room. Each shape represents something and your room will feel the most balanced if you have every shape (circle, oval, square, triangle, and rectangle) in the room.

Windows

You want to keep your energy in, so having a large window opposite the front door is a bit of a no-no. Unless you have the funds to move the window, just cover it with drapes or blinds. A reflective surface also aids in reflecting the energy back into the room. Light is a big part of Feng Shui, as it activates energy, so you’ll want to have light in every dark corner of your home. If the windows don’t provide enough, add some lighting.

Other items

You should only be bringing items into your home that represent beauty and have meaning. Something that has a lot of meaning to you and your family should be featured prominently. To prevent clutter from accumulating, get rid of everything that you don’t love and that doesn’t have a purpose, always editing your collections before  you add something new.

If you need help adding Feng Shui to your home or finding a home that exudes these principals, let me know how I can be of service.
