Home Maintenance Tasks All Homeowners Should Know

February 17, 2020 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

It is no secret that owning a home comes with many responsibilities. There are countless tasks and projects that you need to regularly complete around your property to keep it in excellent condition and functioning at its best. While some tasks should be handled by a professional, there are many that all homeowners should know how to complete.

Here are five home maintenance tasks that all homeowners should know.

1. Change the Air Filters

The air filters in your home should be replaced often. Depending on the specific product, they should be replaced every month to every few months. When these filters are not replaced, it allows more dust, toxins, and allergens to enter your home. Plus, this task is extremely simple and can be done in just a few minutes.

2. Caulking

There are many areas in your home that use caulk. For example, your showers and bathtubs may use a considerable amount of caulk. You may also use caulk around each of your windows. If the caulk is worn down and needs updating around your windows, for example, it can let air escape and decrease your home’s energy efficiency. If moisture enters any holes or gaps in the caulk, it can cause mold and mildew. Knowing the right type of product to use and how to properly apply it will make a big difference in your house.

3. Clean Your Gutters

When was the last time you cleaned your gutters? This task should be a priority on your home maintenance to-do list. When the gutters become clogged with leaves, twigs, trash, and other debris, it prevents the water from properly draining around your home. It can cause many problems around your property that could have easily been prevented by simply learning and taking the time to properly do this chore.

4. Clean Your Refrigerator’s Coils

The coils on your refrigerator can gather a lot of dust and build-up. If this is not removed, it can cause your fridge to work harder than is necessary and shorten its lifespan. It can also use excess energy, costing you more each month on your utility bill. You can use a vacuum to suck up the dirt or a specialized brush to clean the coils.

5. Clean Your Dryer Vents

Your dryer vents accumulate a significant amount of lint. Unfortunately, lint is highly flammable and creates a large fire hazard if it is not removed. It can also block airflow and cause the dryer to work harder, using more energy and causing your clothes to dry longer than is necessary.

Keeping your home in excellent condition is key if you plan to sell it in the near future. For more information on selling your home, the current real estate market, and home improvement, check out Markham real estate agent Martin MacFarlane’s blog.
