Markham’s Most Family-Friendly Neighbourhoods

July 20, 2016 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

The entire city of Markham can be called family-friendly as it’s got a number of great parks, splash pads and amazing schools. But, there are specific neighbourhoods that make up the very best ones to raise your family. The three neighbourhoods that I will focus on in this article are Cornell, Greensborough and Markham Village: all three top the list of the most family-friendly places to live in Markham.

Cornell

This new community village is located in northeast Markham and began in the 1990s. With detached, semi-detached houses and townhomes, price points vary in this great community. Garages are located in the rear of the home, making way for large windows, front porches and giving a more neighbourly feel to your home. Cornell Village was designed as a walkable community, with shops located close by. There are a number of small and large parks located in Cornell, with natural and man-made features. Development is still happening in this community. Close to the Markham-Stouffville Hospital, plus the community centre, parks (including a 30-acre park) and outdoor rinks, residents don’t tend to move out of Cornell very often.

Greensborough

Located in the most eastern part of Markham, Greensborough is a thriving family-friendly community. Development is still continuing in the northern part of the community. With a Smart Growth model of development, this community was built to be a compact walkable urban centre. This means it is transit-oriented, bicycle-oriented and walkable. The values include long-range sustainability of the community so that residents feel a sense of community. As well, Smart Growth communities like Greensborough work to preserve many of the natural spaces in the community. Greensborough has several forests and parks, which are great for the exploration of kids and adults alike. Walking to the splash pad or Swan Lake to the nature trails is just a few ideas for families to do in Greensborough.

Markham Village

One of the original villages in the City of Markham, Markham Village has historical importance. It is the site of much of Markham’s bustling city life, like the farmer’s market and the community centre. The community centre is a local gem, bringing families from all over Markham and it is great to live close so your kids can walk and enjoy the many amenities it offers. With a library, arena, community meeting room plus many recreational opportunities, there is something for the whole family to enjoy. With older homes and much larger lot sizes, families looking for space and mature growth within the city love Markham Village.
