Mistakes to Avoid When Staging Your Home in Markham

May 24, 2021 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

When it’s time to put your home up for sale, visuals matter. In Markham, you’ll face stiff competition with other sellers, so you’ll want your home to appeal to as many buyers as possible. That’s why staging your home correctly is incredibly important. When potential buyers step into your home, they have to be able to imagine themselves living there. If your home doesn’t capture their imagination, they’re more likely to walk without a second thought; avoid making this and other common mistakes when staging your home in Markham.

Using Highly Personalized Decorations

When you’re staging your home in Markham, avoid using highly personalized decorations. That means taking down pictures of yourself and your family, removing personal treasures and collections, and packing away your kids’ toys. The idea here is that your buyers should be able to envision how they would make the space their own if they decide to purchase your home; that’s difficult to do when there are photos of you staring down at them from every wall.

Forgetting About Your Storage Space

Buyers visiting your home will be poking into every nook and cranny, meaning it’s likely that they will open up kitchen cabinets and closet doors. When you’re cleaning up your home, avoid tossing everything into your closet; to potential buyers, it may appear like your home doesn’t have enough storage space. Instead, take the opportunity to organize your home and remove the things you don’t need, or better yet, take this chance to start packing for your move.

Not Cleaning Up After Your Pets

While pets can be a wonderful part of our lives, not everyone feels the same way. Unfortunately, knowing that a home had pets in it can be an instant turn-off for some buyers. In order to avoid discouraging potential buyers, it’s important to remove all signs of your pets. This means vacuuming up fur, removing stains, and hiding food and water bowls. Cat owners may want to move or take down cat trees, while dog owners should put leashes and collars neatly away.

Using Artificial Scents and Air Fresheners

Using artificial scents to cover up smells is not just distracting; when you use artificial scents, savvy buyers will likely suspect that you smoke in the home or that you’re trying to cover up a mold issue. Instead of using an air freshener, crack open a window and let fresh air circulate through your home. If you smoke, do so outside, and get a non-smoker to do a scent test of your home. They’ll be able to let you know if the smell of smoke is lingering on your walls and carpets.
