Securing a Job in Canada’s High-Tech Capital: Markham

April 6, 2016 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

This article will identify the route to take in your Markham job search, where there are many opportunities available for the right people in the high-tech sector.

In 1997, Markham began an aggressive marketing campaign to attract high-tech companies to the area. Almost 20 years later, Markham has the largest concentration of high-tech companies in Canada, even beating out the City of Vancouver and the City of Toronto (by a long shot). We can boast 37,000 jobs in over 1,000 high-technology companies and more than 400 head offices that are located in the City of Markham. While IBM is definitely one of the most notable of high-tech companies who make their home here, there is so much more to it than that.

If you are planning a move to Markham because of the great opportunities and communities here, you may be wondering how you go about getting a job at one of these career-growing companies.

jobs in Markham

Start by downloading the Markham business directory. Here you can research the different companies located in Markham, with information on number of employees and other pertinent information you might need when seeking employment. From there, you can go to the relevant website of the Markham company and look at their employment opportunities page. For example, the City of Markham has a number of jobs available and you can easily apply for all of them once registered to their site.

Using job search sites from home is incredibly easy these days. Ensure your LinkedIn profile is updated and relevant and then try to connect with members of the Markham business community. There are over 1,000 Markham companies listed on LinkedIn and you can follow the ones that seem most appropriate to find out about new opportunities. Another job search site that is very favourable is Indeed, as they search out listings from the web and post them on their site. Once it knows your most-used job searches, it will update you with whatever new jobs have become available based on that search without you even having to enter in the search term again.

There are a number of government programs you can access in Markham to assist in your job hunt. If you are a student or new immigrant, these programs can be especially helpful.

Networking is key when it comes to getting a job in Markham and a group like LeTip Markham Networking could be the key to your success. You’ll meet new people and be offered some leads towards gaining business or employment.

Using a recruiter or job search agency can also be very helpful, especially if you have specific skills that companies find hard to get. Register yourself with an agency and let them do the work of finding you a job.
