The Green Focus of Markham, ON

March 2, 2022 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

Markham’s community knows the importance of environmental issues globally and does its part to take care of the earth starting locally. The community is focused on promoting greener living, having put together a visionary plan starting in 2011 to turn Markham into one of the most sustainable and healthy communities in North America. The city is continuously taking steps to reduce carbon emissions and global warming and form a more wholesome living environment with the plan. This is possible through 2 key categories of focus.

Conservation, Efficiency, and Specialized Technologies

The city of Markham is determined to reach its goal of zero net emissions by 2050. This is possible through a 3-step plan: changing to renewable, low-carbon energy sources, decreasing local energy consumption as a whole, and producing more local energy. The city has taken to this end by laying out specific tips and guidelines for residents to use daily resources better. This includes cooking in bulk, using solar energy for water heating, and completely switching to efficient light bulbs. Similarly, the process involves making all corporate and municipal buildings more environmentally sound through steps like “retrofit” renovations of existing buildings to reach compliance. Markham also provides residents with high-speed electric vehicle charging stations around town, promoting greener transport.

Environmental Awareness

Animals and the creatures of nature are integral to the ecosystem. Markham has taken measures to care for the natural habitat and encourages citizens to take small steps to do the same. This includes making homes and buildings more bird-friendly with special window glass, preventing harmful collisions. The many other creatures of Markham, like foxes and raccoons, are protected under legislation prohibiting the removal of animals from public land and guidelines for how to co-exist best. The community also knows how crucial natural pollinators are for environmental wellbeing. Markham has, therefore, set up initiatives to protect and promote the health of creatures like bees and butterflies through actions like founding special gardens. Similarly, the tree life of the city is heavily protected and maintained. To cut trees within city limits, one must get a special permit, preventing excessive clearing.

Community ecological awareness also involves the improvement of personal habits, including better use of resources. Markham has designated recycling bins located around town explicitly dedicated to old and unwanted clothing and textiles, encouraging responsible disposal. The city also seeks to enhance public awareness of proper recycling of materials like plastics and paper products and promotes buying second-hand. The community similarly takes pride in their three local farmers’ markets and community allotment gardens, encouraging more convenient and responsible food sources. Another communally encouraged habit is simply taking in nature and appreciating the natural world. Markham promotes “shinrin yoku,” or forest bathing/therapy, a practice rooted in Japanese culture intended to enrich daily life by deepening personal connections to nature.

Among a passion for taking care of the shared local environment, the Markham community provides an enriching place to live overall. Get in contact with Martin MacFarlane today for more information and complete viewing access to available properties in the area.
