Six Best Renovation Trends

June 20, 2016 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

  1. Tech Free Living Rooms are Where It’s At

There has been a noticeable shift in homeowners seeking out an area in their home that they deem tech free. One of the most obvious rooms to give this prestigious title is the living room. Thankfully the “formal” living room is getting a reboot from the days of plastic covered furniture and no-touch antique couches. Today the formal living room is used more freely for family gatherings with a tech free vibe. This trend is seeing more comfortable furniture which offers a calm escape where one can read, catch up with friends and family and escape from the overdose of excessive screen time the majority of people are experiencing throughout their day.

  1. Formal Dining Rooms are In Again

Although not everyone can appreciate the value of having a formal dining room, for those who have the space (unused main floor office for example), reserving this special area on your main floor for entertaining can be a dream come true. Formal dining rooms can be a fun way to interject a more grown up dining experience. Whether you host the occasional dinner party, like to invite friends over for cocktail and apps or perhaps a separate area away from the chaos of the kitchen or from little ears, the formal dining room is a place where you can have fun decorating without worrying about whether the table is toddler worthy.

  1. Colour in the Kitchen

Gone are the days of dark cherry cabinets and stained oak cabinets, 2016 is the year of coloured cabinets in the kitchen. With the rise in popularity of DIY painted furniture, kitchen cabinet resurfacing with such mediums as chalk paint also gained momentum. With a multitude of various colours DIY enthusiasts report a total kitchen cabinet transformation in a few short days. If you aren’t quite up for the task, hiring a company to paint them or even reface them can be a much more economical choice then completely replacing them.

  1. Make a Statement in the Bathroom

A quick and inexpensive way to interject some fresh style in your bathroom can be as easy as changing out your bathroom mirror. If your bathroom could use an update but perhaps it is low on your priority list for renovations, consider shopping around for a bathroom mirror that makes a statement. Get out of your comfort zone and look for something that has some impact, for example if you come across a large vintage or ornate frame that speaks to you, bring it to your local glass shop to have a mirror inserted. Regardless of your taste, don’t be afraid to think outside the box on this one and have some fun with it.

  1. Heated Entry Way Floors

Nothing quite says “Welcome Home” on a cold winter day then stepping onto a heated entryway floor. If you are renovating your foyer or mudroom consider adding an in floor heating system. Not only will it be a welcome treat on your cold feet, it will also help to keep the excess snow and water off your shoes and boots and subsequently off your stocking feet.

  1. Clever Organizing Solutions

Optimizing your space and storage throughout your home can be a challenge. With the rise of purging and decluttering on trend for 2016, it’s no wonder that smart solutions for organization are also on trend.  Whether you are looking to save space in your kitchen, bathroom or anywhere really, be sure to consult a professional organizer. Especially if you are remodeling as this is an opportune time to incorporate some clever organizational resolutions.  There will of course be some type of consultation fee, however it will be money well spent as they can work with you to optimize your storage needs.
