Home Maintenance Tasks You May Be Overlooking

October 15, 2018 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

Being a homeowner comes with many perks such as the freedom to make upgrades and changes as you please, the ability to build equity, and a place to call your own. However, it also comes with much responsibility. While it can seem like there are always tasks for you to complete, there are several that many homeowners tend to overlook or forget about. Let’s take a look at a few home-maintenance projects you may need to place on your to-do list this weekend.

1. Reseal Your Grout

Grout is a very porous substance that can absorb dirt, grime, and bacteria. To keep grout in excellent condition and to prevent it from absorbing these elements, you must seal it. However, simply sealing it once is not enough. You want to place a new layer of sealant on it at least once a year. This will keep dirt and bacteria away and keep your grout in excellent condition and looking great.

2. Clean Your Dishwasher

You may not think that your dishwasher needs to be cleaned since it is the machine that does a majority of cleaning for you. However, to keep this appliance running efficiently and to prolong its lifespan, you need to clean it every three to six months. Luckily, this task is extremely fast and simple.

First, check the disposal drain and check for any caught food or other debris.

Second, place a dishwasher-safe cup on the top rack of your appliance and fill it with vinegar.

Finally, run a normal cycle on the dishwasher with just the cup of vinegar inside the appliance.

3. Clean Refrigerator Coils

Another task that is extremely simple and fast is to clean the coils on your refrigerator. Over time, these coils gather dust and dirt, which makes the appliance work harder and shortens its lifespan. Luckily, to clean the coils, you can use a vacuum and suck up much of the dirt and dust. You can also use a special coil brush and wipe away much of the gathered dust as well.

4. Replacing Your Air Filters

You should change the air filter in your home at least once every three months and more frequently if you have pets inside or you have family members with allergies and breathing problems. And not only do clean air filters help purify the air in your home, but it keeps your home’s energy usage low. Additionally, switching your air filter can be done in a matter of minutes. It is simply taking the time to purchase a filter and making the switch.

When was the last time you cleaned your home’s gutters? This is a task that should already be on your fall to-do list to help prepare your home for the winter season. Clogged gutters can create major blockages, which result in large leaks. Additionally, if these blockages freeze, you could find yourself replacing your gutters in the spring.
