How to Love Your Home Again

June 24, 2017 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

Many homeowners have considered selling their Markham home during the seller’s market. With the market slowing a little for sellers and buyers, we aren’t fully seeing the bidding wars and the homes being sold before the first showing. And that’s ok! If you were considering selling your home, but are having second thoughts, but still aren’t all that thrilled about it, there are ways you can love your home again. Here’s how.

1.       Get rid of some things

Maybe the issue isn’t with your home at all, but what’s in it. The saying goes that everything in your home should either have a purpose, a value or be something you love. If you have items in your home that don’t fit the bill, get rid of them and then see how you feel. If your home feels cramped, you may just have too much stuff and this can include furniture that is old or tattered, decor that is dated and items you thought you’d use but never did.

2.       Get a paint job

There is nothing like a fresh coat of paint to make a home seem new again. If the colours you’ve chosen have you feeling down or your walls need a refresh, get out to the paint store. Even better, hire a painter to do the job for you so you don’t get bitter having to do the work.

3.       Hire a cleaner and a handyman

Sometimes we don’t like our homes because they are not as clean as we’d like and need a bunch of minor repairs. Every time you look at that ripped screen, do you feel pained inside? If so, and you don’t have the time, set aside a few hundred dollars in the budget and hire someone to clean your home from top to bottom and someone else to do the repairs. You will see a huge difference just doing these two things.

4.       Add some light

Is your home dark and that’s the part of you can’t stand? If you can’t afford to renovate to add windows, add more lighting. Overhead lighting isn’t always a great solution, but lamps can light up a room and add a soft glow.

5.       Do a small renovation

If you don’t have the budget to rehaul your entire home, do one small upgrade. Rather than replace all of the cupboards in your kitchen, try painting them or just replacing the knobs. Get a new toilet if your old one causes you issues constantly. Your front door really makes an impact on the exterior of your home, so if you shudder every time you pull in the driveway, try getting a new door. Add a backsplash, which is an easy weekend project and not too costly.

If you really can’t love your home again and think you want to sell or if you want to see what else is out there, contact me and I’ll help you find something you do love.
